Garay revives Benfica's hopes with 2-1 win over Celtic

© Reuters Benfica's Ola John and Ezequiel Garay secured a 2-1 win over Celtic on Tuesday that threw the race for the second qualifying spot in Champions League Group G wide open with one round of matches remaining.

The Lisbon club are level on seven points with the Scots but have a better head-to-head record. If Benfica's result at already-qualified Barcelona at least matches Celtic's at home to Spartak Moscow they will reach the last 16.

Their 20-year-old Liberian-born winger John, signed from Dutch side Twente Enschede in the close season, drilled home the opener after seven minutes but although Celtic surrendered most of the possession they were deadly up front.

Striker Giorgos Samaras equalised with the visitors' first opportunity, towering above the defence to head in from a corner after 32 minutes.

Benfica missed several chances as Celtic hung on for a draw that would have put them through but their persistence paid off when Argentine Garay volleyed the winner after 71 minutes.

Barcelona had qualified earlier on Tuesday with a 3-0 win at Spartak, who are bottom.

"I'm disappointed with the two goals we conceded," Celtic manager Neil Lennon told the BBC. "There was a lack of composure, a nervousness, about us at times on the ball."

John chose the perfect moment to grab his first ever goal for Benfica.

Celtic were guilty of squandering possession and Argentine winger Eduardo Salvio punished them, surging past two defenders on the right before sending over a cross that eventually fell for John to fire in.

Benfica coach Jorge Jesus opted for the tall trio of Nemanja Matic, Luisao and Oscar Cardozo to counteract Celtic's menace from set pieces but they were still found wanting.

With their first corner the Scottish champions equalised just after the half an hour mark when Samaras was left unmarked at the far post and converted an easy header to the despair of the home fans on a wet evening in Lisbon.

Benfica created chance after chance in the second half, the best when Brazilian striker Lima ghosted past a defender, beat Celtic keeper Fraser Forster but had his shot cleared off the line by Welsh defender Adam Mathews.

Celtic, who earned a memorable 2-1 win against Barcelona two weeks ago, ran out of luck with 20 minutes remaining.

Matic floated a beautiful cross into the box, Luisao won a header in the area and cushioned it for Garay to volley into the net.

Formula One chief says to fight $650 million damages claim

© Reuters Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone said he plans to contest a $650 million damages claim filed in New York, the latest legal case to stem from the sale of the motor racing series in 2005.

Investment firm Bluewaters Communications Holdings filed the lawsuit at New York State Supreme Court last week, naming Formula One commercial head Ecclestone as one of the defendants.

In its claim, Bluewaters said it was prepared to offer more than any other bidder for the sport and alleged that Ecclestone had engineered a sale to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners so they would retain him in his role.

"Ecclestone was motivated by a thirst for power. He wanted desperately to remain "F1 Supremo"," the Bluewaters claim said.

The damages relate to what Bluewaters say would be their share of lost earnings from the sport, which attracts huge television audiences for its series of 20 annual races around the globe.

Its bid was financed by New York private equity firms Apollo Global Management and King Street Capital Management, it said.

Ecclestone told Reuters he was surprised that the case had been brought and said he had not heard of Bluewaters.

"I couldn't have been involved because I had nothing to sell," he told Reuters by telephone from Brazil where the final Formula One grand prix race of the season will take place at the weekend.

Ecclestone, 82, is a British billionaire who, since taking charge in the 1970s, has built up Formula One into one of the world's most popular and lucrative sports.

The case relates to the sale of a 47 percent stake in Formula One by German bank BayernLB to private equity firm Capital Partners in 2005.

A German court jailed banker Gerhard Gribkowsky earlier this year after he admitted taking $44 million in illegal payments to favor UK-based buyout firm CVC.

The New York case also named BayernLB and CVC among the defendants. Neither company would comment on the suit.

BayernLB said last month it was seeking $400 million in damages from Ecclestone over the sale to CVC.

Ecclestone said he would fight that claim in court if necessary.

Fabio Quagliarella gave Juventus a 38th minute lead with a deflected shot and Arturo Vidal's second half effort was also diverted past Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech on the hour.

Messi's brace for Barca took his tally in the competition to 56, second on the all-time scorers' list, as the Catalans guaranteed progress into the knockout rounds with a win that clinched top spot in Group G.

While Barcelona moved to an unassailable 12 points, the runners-up spot is still up for grabs after Benfica beat Celtic 2-1, meaning they both have seven points with one game left.

Scottish champions Celtic, who produced a stunning win over Barca in the previous round of matches, were 20 minutes away from earning the score draw that would have put them through with the Spaniards before Ezequiel Garay struck the winner.

Galatasaray kept alive their chances of reaching the knockout phase with a 1-0 victory over already-qualified Manchester United.

They are vying with CFR Cluj for the runners-up spot in Group H after the Romanians beat Braga 3-1 with a first-half hat-trick from Rui Pedro doing the damage.
